Morocco: A Jewish Past

Monday, March 29th, 2010 | Filed in News | No Comments »

These images constitute a continuation of my work on a long-term project on the Jewish history of Morocco. This history is over 2000 years old and exemplifies the possibility of real peace and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. At its peak, the Jewish population reached nearly 400 000 people – the largest in the Arab World. They shared in language, culture and ritual. Today the population has dwindled to only 3500, but the memory of the past lives on, revered in the minds of Moroccans throughout the country.

Faces

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 | Filed in News | 2 Comments »

A couple of weeks ago I spent the week shooting Toronto Fashion Week for the Fashion Design Council of Canada. It was the second time I done so, and I felt that I needed to try something different and try to explore an aspect of the event in a more conceptual way, rather than simply documenting. Not to mention that five days of shooting more or less the same thing can become pretty stifling.
So I decided to try a series of candid portraits of models getting their hair and makeup done and played around with blowing out the highlights with a direct flash.

The Guardians of a Jewish Past

Thursday, October 1st, 2009 | Filed in News | 1 Comment »

With over 2000 years of history in Morocco, the Jewish people became an integral part of the country. Since the foundation of Israel the population of Jews has dropped from nearly 300 000 to only 3000 today. The remaining historic and religious sites, synagogues and cemeteries are protected through the Jewish community, but the guardians are almost all Muslims, a duty often passed down trough families. Some of these guardian were handed the keys to these sacred sited by their neighbours, the last Jews to leave the towns, and were cared for for decades without a single visitor. These are some of those guardians. (note: image # 7 the last Berber Jew in the Ourika valley)
